How Much CBD You Should Take (and Why)

UPSY Balance Act Tincture, how much is right for you?

You’re right to question how much CBD you should take. Taking too little won’t help you. And taking too much CBD is a waste of good CBD — and good money!

The best CBD dose varies depending on your unique needs and goals. If you’re looking to try CBD, or simply want the best results from the CBD you’re taking now, we’ve got your back.

Here’s a quick guide to CBD dosing for your body and condition.

How to Find Your CBD Dose

As the saying goes, “slow and steady wins the race.” So regardless of your desired effect, you’ll want to begin with a low dose and go slow. More isn’t necessarily better.

Try starting with a serving of 5-10 mg of CBD. Some newbies like taking a smaller test dose — even just two or three milligrams — to see if they experience side effects before scaling up. Side effects from CBD are very rare but can include mild nausea and drowsiness.

After taking 5-10 mg for a week, increase your dose by about 3-5 mg. Continue with that dose for another week before increasing it again. Repeat the process until you get the relief you need.

Everyone is Different

Body weight plays a big role in how much CBD you should take, as does your condition and desired outcome. Smaller people usually need less CBD.  An overarching guideline for CBD use is to take 1-6 mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. That means a 150-pound person would take 15-90 mg daily, depending on their condition.

Rule of Thumb: Most people take 1-6mg of CBD for every 10 pounds of body weight

However, your body may be sensitive to CBD, and you may have a strong response even if you weigh more. Remember to start low and go slow.

CBD Onset Time

CBD works in two ways: slow and fast.

Yes, you’ll likely feel the effects of CBD soon after you take a dose, but you’ll also notice the benefits accrue over a few weeks as your body adjusts. Ultimately, taking CBD is about balance, and it takes time for your system to find equilibrium.

The onset time varies with how you take your CBD. Sublingual tinctures are rapidly absorbed through the blood vessels of your mouth and have a 5- to 15-minute onset time. Edibles and CBD beverages take a little longer — more like a half hour. Topical CBD products, which are applied to the skin for aches and pains, take the longest to absorb, with effects peaking around 45 minutes after application.

What is Nano CBD?

Nano CBD products (such as our own UPSY Balance Act tincture) are special. They’re more effective than conventional CBD because they’re easier for your body to absorb.

Our nano-emulsification process reduces the size of the CBD molecules, making them more bioavailable. The enhanced bioavailability not only speeds uptake; it keeps the CBD in your system at higher levels, longer.

Nano technology isn’t new or specific to CBD. It's a proven pharmaceutical technology used for many medications that are hard to absorb.

Our water-based bodies struggle to absorb CBD oil, so most of it goes to waste. With nano CBD, more of the active ingredient is usable, and that means you get more bang for your CBD buck.

How Much CBD Should I Take for…

Different conditions require different amounts of CBD. If you want a better night’s sleep, a dose of 25 mg might do the trick. But for anxiety you may need significantly more.

Since conditions respond differently to varying amounts of CBD, research trials have taken widely different approaches to dosing. Some studies have tried a large one-time dose; others repeat the doses daily. Some have used very large amounts of CBD — more than 1,000 mg — while others used much less.

You probably want simple relief for sleeplessness, anxiety, or low energy. If that’s the case, you’ll likely settle into a dose 20-50 mg per day.

Common CBD Doses

CBD for Sleep: 20-40mg
CBD for anxiety or depression: 40-100mg
CBD for pain: 5-20mg
CBD for balanced energy: 10-50mg

Dialing-In Your Dose

When you get the effect you want from your CBD — after slowly increasing your dose — try increasing it just a bit more for another week. If you don’t see more benefits, go back down. Taking more won’t help.

Can You Overdose on CBD?

No, you cannot overdose on CBD. The World Health Organization reports CBD is generally well-tolerated and has a “good safety profile,” but, if you took a massive dose of CBD, you might feel drowsy.

Research has shown dosages of 1,500 mg are safe when taken daily. So, as you experiment with CBD, you can rest assured that you aren’t endangering your health.
